I’ve been a father for a few years now and I’ve come to look forward to father’s day. It means sleeping in an extra half hour, maybe a little token present from my wife, a nice craft made by my 5 month old and my 2 year old, and a good day of family activities.
If you read any decent media sources, then you know that this beautiful tradition has been hijacked by the man-hating left. From the famous man-haters like Lena Dunham, who apparently has a disdain for stay-at-home dads, to your neighborhood “I’m with Her” activist, fathers got labeled as unnecessary or at least passed over to celebrate single moms or other nontraditional families.
After all, the left speaks so mightily against “the patriarchy,” I can only assume that you’re less of a progressive activist if you celebrate a father when there are other, more persecuted people to be celebrated.
Fathers, no matter what tale the left wants to tell, are a cornerstone of our civilization and every measurable metric affirms that fact. The Daily Wire spelled it out better than anyone:
63% of youths who commit suicide come from a fatherless home.
While I hold no ill-will to moms doing it on their own – in fact there isn’t anything harder in the world, I’m sure – our society needs to remember that a father is a gift to be celebrated and encouraged. That’s doubly true on Father’s Day.
It’s so “now” to honor non-traditional families. However, it’s so right to remember the benefits of the traditional family. After all, as far as current statistics go, the best indicator for a child’s success is whether their mom and dad stayed together.
I’d like to personally salute the other fathers in the world who are doing the best they can to provide and to be there for their kid’s obscene meltdowns in swim class and their diaper blowouts – the ones where the shit is just smeared all over their back and their bedsheets – these are the days of our lives.
And for those guys my age or younger who are unsure about taking the plunge into fatherhood: do it. Being a dad isn’t just something to do some day, it’s the reason we are here.
